Tips from Shelly Carnevale FNP-BC, as the warmer weather approaches.
With Spring here already, it’s time to think about outdoor yard work and cleaning up without worsening your chronic pain. My number one tip is to pace yourself. We might be eager to get as much done as possible, but yardwork can put us into a significant pain flare. When you work and have to “pay the price” the next day, you have overdone it and might need to practice pacing your activities. Additional tips to avoiding a pain flare are using correct body mechanics, such as lifting and twisting properly. We all know how important this is but it is easy to forget, especially when we are focused on the job at hand. Remember to bend at your knees and use those legs to lift – not your back and neck. Also, remember that yard work is exercise and a good warm up and cool down are important. Make sure to stay hydrated and drink lots of water. Best of luck!
