There are different types of neck (cervical pain). One type is axial, meaning the pain stays within the cervical area and does travel or radiate. The second type, and the focus of this entry, is radicular pain. This is pain that travels or shoots from the neck to other areas such as the shoulder, arms, and even can cause headaches. This pain can sometimes be described at burning, numbness, tingling, etc. The causes of this pain can be spinal stenosis, nerve root inflammation/damage, bone spurs, herniated discs and spinal degeneration. A cervical epidural places steroids into the epidural space to decrease pain and inflammation caused by the above issues. This can help decrease radicular symptoms and help control pain, while hopefully increasing function.
